The Purple Hound Star Ratings

If you’re here, you’re thinking about improving disabled accessibility standards in the UK – brilliant!

Our aim is to get as many Purple Hound stickers as possible into retailers and venues across the country – whether they’re hotels, restaurants, bars, shops or sport arenas.

By displaying the Purple Hound sticker, a simple act that takes only a few seconds, you are helping make a massive difference and affecting positive change for people who represent an annual market of £212 billion a year in the UK alone! More importantly, you are helping change public attitudes and perceptions forever. Not bad for a few seconds’ work?

Scroll down to read the full criteria that needs to be achieved in order to obtain the standard Purple Hound sticker, each level of star sticker, and the Sound as a Hound sticker.

Purple Hound sticker (no stars)
Purple Hound retailers and venues displaying all stickers, including the standard sticker, are committed to:

  • Agreeing to make a positive, proactive effort to make things better for those with accessibility needs; and to contribute to helping improve accessibility standards for all, wherever possible.
  • Offering the disabled community the same level of service and hospitality as everyone else and treating those with accessibility needs as a precious potential customer base.

In addition to the above, retailers and venues also need to work towards the following eight additional points, wherever practically possible:

  • Providing reception and tables at height for wheelchair users.
  • Seeking disability awareness training – so staff are comfortable helping people with disabilities.
  • Developing an Accessibility statement making your commitments clear.
  • Exploring all possibilities for accessible parking provision close to your entrance/exit.
  • Investigating level access with ground floor toilets and adequate accessible facilities, and ensuring all guests can enter via the main entrance, with wheelchair friendly doors.

Sound as a Hound award

A Sound as a Hound award is a special award that recognises special efforts made by a retailer or venue

In addition to agreeing to Purple Hound’s core principals, Sound as a Hound venues will need to demonstrate remarkable efforts to improve accessibility against all the odds. One example of this would be installing an accessible lift at great expense, in a hotel or venue where nobody thought it possible, or it would appear to be commercially unviable.
Another example would be a lower league football team offering accessible options for home and away fans that would be more in keeping with a higher league status.

The nature of the Sound as a Hound award dictates that a retailer or venue may not necessarily have any star ratings for various reasons, or they could have any number of stars. The Sound as a Hound award recognises individual efforts are outside the remit of the standard star ratings and are worthy of additional recognition.

We work closely with you and carry out research to understand your needs and wishes.
